Our Craftsmanship
Each bag is handcrafted by true North Carolina craftsmen. While its style may appear to be simple, creating
this bag required the abilities of a mechanical engineer, the creativity of an artist and the diligence of detail oriented seamstresses,
and the knowledge and talents of leather craftsmen from Emore Leather Company in Waxhaw, NC. (These amazing professionals are
the very same individuals whose hand work and braiding can be seen on Indian Motorcycles). They have provided Carpet Bag Replicas
with the softest, most durable rope style leather handles as well as the buckle strap and tongue used on the bags.
The various
fabrics we use are purchased through the furniture industry in N.C. Not only are they high quality but these fabrics have been
pretreated to resist soil and stain and truly make an eyecatching bag. Many of the fabrics are "for the trade only", meaning that
they are special order fabrics from Italy for high-end decorators. Because of their limited production and extra high quality,
many of these "for the trade only" fabrics sold for several hundred dollars per yard. To secure these fabrics we purchase
the "short ends". These short ends are sold at a discount as the suppliers do not have enough to complete their projects. Occasionally
an extremely popular fabric becomes available and we will purchase several rolls
at a time. But many times duplicates are
not available.
All bags are tailored in exactly the same way, with the same quality handcrafting. Featuring hand dyed leather,
and brass rivets, there is no plastic anywhere in these bags. The differences you see in pricing reflects our cost of the various
fabrics.
Our bag "pops" open due to its spring loaded steel frame. We have added the leather belt style closure for added security.
When the bag is opened, the huge opening is called a "gate mouth" opening. In 1999, while reinventing this "suitcase" from
the 1800's, we realized no one had thought to put a spring in the hinge of a suitcase, which we have done. Occasionally a purse
manufacturer might use them in their purse frames, but it must have seemed too far fetched in 1999 to create
a spring loaded suitcase that helped to open and close itself.
We are very proud of our product and proud to manufacture
the bag here in North Carolina with suppliers who manufacture in the USA.
