A Note About My Bags
Carpet Bag Replicas, has been in business for 11 years, sewing and selling day in and day out to produce our version of the carpet bag. We had been so busy doing our own thing, making and selling our carpet bags, that we hadn’t had time to spy upon our neighbors to see how our bag compared to theirs. It wasn’t until a competitor’s carpet bag was mistakenly returned to us that we realized the differences in construction, quality and uses.
As it turns out, most of our competitors had been making
their bags for use by the Civil War Re-enacators. The re-enactors really wanted their carpet bag to resemble, as closely as possible,
the actual bags made in the late 1800’s. One reason that those bags were so popular during that time period is because they could
be made quickly and cheaply and sold for a low price of a dollar or two.
Linings were thin unbleached muslin, exterior fabrics
were often pieces of worn carpet. The metal frames were able to slide around a bit within the confines of the bag’s fabric. Certain
laborious construction techniques such as top stitching could be skipped over in making of these affordable bags. Those particular
sewing techniques would certainly have been used in a much more expensive item as they
would give the finished product a very tailored
and expensive appearance. Apparently our competitors
had been making their affordable “replica” bags for quite some time since their
main customers were
the re-enactors.
Our carpet bags were more tailored, used more detailed construction, used more expensive
fabric and had spring loaded hardware. The bags we make and have always made is everything that the “replica” bag isn’t. Our
bag is handcrafted, has an updated style and is a great multi use bag. High end linings and tapestry fabrics…spring loaded open and
close hardware secured to prevent movement…soft leather finishings…and finally the laborious top stitching that finishes off our tailored
bag.
We are simply convinced that our new and improved Carpet Bag/Mary Poppins bag is the best anywhere. It was American conceived
and American built and we’re proud of it.
